Ash Can An ERDA program of taking samples of the atmosphere from known geographical points at regular intervals of time and at altitudes between 80,000 and 135,000 feet. Balloon-borne and air-to-air recovered, the program monitors radioactivity by obtaining stratospheric air samples over a wide latitudinal range.
Assault Breaker A non-nuclear response to massed armor with radically increased kill effectiveness, and involves a near forward battle area surveillance aircraft with active and passive all-weather sensors for providing midcourse command guidance for standoff weapons. It is a DARPA concept.

DoD money allocated: $37 million, and $50+ million in aid. About 500 personell at Hoedspruit AFB, South Africa and about 710 (600 USAF) involved, more than 580 sorties flown, about 970 tons of cargo and 1,200 passengers transported. In addition, 14 aircraft were chartered under USAID grant and are planed for an expanded air support capability until emergency road repairs are completed.
